Metal fence contractor Los Angeles — everything worth knowing

Steel or aluminium, why the coating matters more than the metal, what makes horizontal slat fencing sag, how gates and automation should be planned together, and the five questions that tell you whether a contractor has built fences that last.

Steel or aluminium — the choice that decides everything else

Nearly every metal fence in Los Angeles is one of two materials, and picking the wrong one costs you either money or maintenance.

Steel

Stronger, heavier and cheaper per foot. It takes an impact that would bend aluminium, which is why it is the right call for driveway gates, commercial frontage and anywhere security is the actual point. The trade-off is corrosion: steel only resists rust because of its coating, so the coating is the whole ballgame.

Aluminium

Will not rust, full stop. Lighter, easier on hinges and hardware, and the sensible choice within a few miles of the coast or anywhere sprinklers hit the fence. It costs more per foot and dents more easily, but for a residential perimeter that is rarely the deciding factor.

Wrought iron

Most fencing sold as wrought iron today is mild steel worked in traditional patterns. Genuine wrought iron is rare and expensive. Neither is a problem — just know which you are buying and price it accordingly.

The finish is the fence

A metal fence fails at its coating long before it fails structurally. Understanding the finish is the single most useful thing you can know as a buyer.

Powder coat

Electrostatically applied dry powder, baked on. Far tougher than wet paint, and the standard for quality metal fencing. What matters is the preparation underneath — powder coat over unprepared steel looks perfect for two years and then lifts in sheets.

Galvanising underneath

On steel, hot-dip galvanising before powder coating is the difference between twenty-five years and eight. Zinc protects the steel even where the coating gets chipped. Ask whether the steel is galvanised before coating, because plenty is not.

Where it goes wrong

• Cut ends left uncoated after fabrication, so rust starts inside the section and works outward.
• Welds not dressed and re-primed, which is why rust usually appears at joints first.
• Posts coated on the outside but open at the bottom, letting water sit inside the tube.
• Touch-up paint that does not match, applied over rust rather than back to bare metal.

Horizontal slat fencing, done properly

Horizontal slat is the look most Los Angeles remodels are asking for, and it is the style most often built badly.

A slat spans between posts with nothing supporting its middle. Run them too far apart and the slats bow, which is the sagging, uneven look you see on cheap installations. Proper spans need either closer posts or a heavier section, and both cost more.

Slat spacing is a design decision worth thinking about. Tight spacing gives you a near-solid screen but catches wind like a sail, which means more load on the posts. Wider spacing keeps the airflow and the light but shows more of what is behind it. We usually walk the line with clients and hold up a sample so they can see the difference before committing.

Metal gates and automation

A metal gate is where the fence earns its keep, and where most of the engineering sits.

Gate posts carry far more than line posts — the whole leaf weight, plus the leverage of it swinging. They get a deeper, wider footing and usually a heavier section. Hinges are rated to the actual weight of the leaf, not the nearest available size, and on wide driveway gates we specify hinges with adjustment so the gate can be re-trued later without cutting anything.

If automation is going on now or later, say so at the design stage. An operator needs a gate that moves freely by hand, posts that will not flex, and a route for power and safety-sensor cable. Retrofitting all of that to a gate built without it in mind is the expensive way round.

What actually makes a fence secure

Height and material matter less than most people expect. What stops a determined person is time and visibility, and a few practical details do most of the work:

• Pickets that resist a foothold. Wide gaps and horizontal rails at climbing height help anyone getting over.
• No exposed fixings on the outside. Bolts that can be undone from the street are not security.
• A gate that latches every time. The commonest security failure we see is a gate that sags and stops latching, so it just gets left pushed to.
• Sight lines. A fence that hides an intruder completely is not always the right answer for a front boundary.

Where the aim is genuine security rather than boundary definition, steel and a properly built gate matter more than adding another foot of height.

What Los Angeles does to metal

Coastal air

Salt-laden air corrodes uncoated and poorly coated steel far faster than most people expect, and it reaches further inland than the beach cities. This is the single biggest argument for aluminium on the Westside and in the South Bay.

Sun

UV fades colour over many years, particularly darker finishes on south and west-facing runs. A quality powder coat holds up well, but a cheap one chalks and goes flat.

Irrigation

Sprinklers hitting the base of steel posts every morning will find any gap in the coating. Adjusting two heads costs nothing and adds years.

Santa Ana winds

A closed slat panel is a solid sail. Wind load goes straight into the posts and footings, which is why exposed runs need closer post spacing and deeper footings than the same fence in a sheltered yard.

Repair, refinish or replace

Metal fencing is repairable in ways vinyl is not. Sections can be cut out and rebuilt, bent pickets straightened, damaged panels replaced and the repair refinished so it disappears into the run.

• Surface rust. Wire back to bare metal, prime and recoat. Cosmetic if it is caught early.
• Rust through at the post base. The post is done. Cut out and replace — patching it buys a season.
• Bent or missing pickets. Straighten or replace individually. Usually a small job.
• Failed welds. Re-weld, dress and refinish. Common on gates that have been sagging.
• Whole-run coating failure. This is the judgement call. Media blasting and recoating a long run can approach the cost of new fencing.

We will tell you which of those you have. Repainting over rust is not a repair, it is a delay with a bill attached.

What metal fencing costs in Los Angeles

Metal sits above wood and vinyl on day one and usually below both over thirty years. The number moves on:

• Material. Aluminium carries a premium over steel per foot.
• Style. Close-spaced horizontal slat uses far more metal than an open picket of the same height.
• Fabrication. Custom panels built to your measurements cost more than stock panel sizes, and look considerably better on an uneven line.
• Finish. Galvanise-then-powder-coat costs more than powder coat alone, and is worth it on steel.
• Gates. Each one is a build in itself. Automation is a separate line again.
• Ground and slope. A raked or stepped run on a hillside takes longer than a flat one.

Choosing a metal fence contractor

Five questions that separate a good quote from a cheap one:

• Steel or aluminium, and what section size?
• Is the steel galvanised before powder coating?
• Are cut ends and welds sealed and refinished after fabrication?
• What post spacing, and how deep are the footings on this run?
• What are the gate hinges rated for, and is the gate automation-ready?

A contractor who answers those without hedging has built fences that were still straight in year fifteen. One who talks only about start dates has not.
