Pedestrian gate contractor Los Angeles — everything worth knowing

Why every gate problem traces back to one post, when a steel frame inside a wood gate is worth the money, which hardware actually matters, and the five questions that tell you whether a contractor has built gates that still latch in year ten.

It all hangs on one post

Everything about a pedestrian gate comes back to the hinge post. The leaf hangs off it, swings against it, and puts every bit of its weight and leverage into it. When a gate stops latching — which is the single most common complaint we get — the post has almost always moved.

The mistake is treating the gate post like a fence post. A fence post carries a share of a static load. A gate post carries a cantilevered weight that swings, slams and gets leaned on, and it does it thousands of times a year.

We set gate posts deeper and wider than the line posts either side, in more concrete, and on wider or heavier leaves we go to a bigger section entirely. It costs a little more on day one and it is the difference between a gate that works in year ten and one that needs re-hanging in year two.

Metal, wood, or wood on a steel frame

Metal

Steel or aluminium, powder coated. It stays square, takes daily use without complaint, and can be built open or fully screened depending on the infill. For most modern Los Angeles properties this is the right answer.

Wood

Warmer, and the natural match if the fence is cedar or redwood. The catch is that a solid wood gate is heavy and timber moves, so a wide wood leaf built without bracing will rack out of square within a season or two.

Our usual recommendation where someone wants the look of timber and the behaviour of metal. The steel frame holds the geometry, the timber does the visual work, and the gate stays square. It costs more than a plain wood gate and considerably less than replacing one twice.

Hardware is where cheap gates give themselves away

A gate is a moving assembly, and the moving parts decide how it feels every time you use it.

• Hinges. Rated to the actual weight of the leaf, not the nearest size that will bolt on. Adjustable hinges are worth the extra because they let the gate be re-trued later without cutting anything.
• Latches. A latch has a tolerance. Gates move slightly with temperature and settlement, so a latch with a little adjustment in it keeps working when a rigid one starts missing.
• Self-closing. Spring hinges or a closer, essential for pool gates and useful anywhere with children or dogs.
• Stops and drop rods. A gate that swings past its stop puts strain straight into the hinges and the post.
• Fixings. Stainless or hot-dipped galvanised. Anything else bleeds rust down the gate within a year, and near the coast much sooner.

Locks, keypads and intercoms

A pedestrian gate is often the entry point that actually gets used, so how it locks matters more than on a driveway gate.

• Keyed latch or deadbolt. Simple, reliable, no power required.
• Keypad. No keys to lose or hand out. Good for households with cleaners, dog walkers and regular visitors.
• Electric strike with intercom. Release the gate from inside the house. The common choice on multi-unit property and where deliveries are constant.
• Smart locks. App access and temporary codes. Convenient, but they need power and they need weather-rated hardware outdoors.

If any of this is going on now or later, tell us at the design stage. Running cable to a gate post is straightforward while the post hole is open and a nuisance afterwards.

Pool gates are a different standard

If your pedestrian gate forms part of a pool barrier it is not a design choice any more, it is a specification.

• The gate must be self-closing and self-latching from any open position.
• It must swing away from the pool, not toward it.
• The latch must sit out of a small child’s reach.
• Gaps and the space beneath the gate are limited so a child cannot get through or under.

Metal gates meet this comfortably, but the hardware still has to be right and it has to keep working. We check pool gates as part of any service visit, because a self-closing hinge that has weakened is a gate that quietly stopped complying.

What actually goes wrong

• Dragging on the ground. Post movement, nine times out of ten. Occasionally worn hinge pins on a heavy leaf.
• Missing the latch. The leaf has dropped at the far edge, so the latch and keeper no longer line up.
• Sticking or binding. The opening has moved, or the gate has racked out of square.
• Hinge screws pulling out. Undersized fixings, or a timber post that has softened around them.
• Rust streaks. Electroplated fixings on a metal or timber gate. Cosmetic, but it tells you what else was specified cheaply.
• Self-closer stopped closing. Spring fatigue. Cheap on its own, serious if it is a pool gate.

Most of these are an hour or two of work if they are caught early. Left alone, a dragging gate wears its own hardware and eventually damages the post it hangs on.

Matching the gate to the fence

A gate that does not match the fence is the first thing a visitor notices, and it is a surprisingly common outcome when the fence and the gate were done by different people at different times.

We match the material, the infill spacing, the finish and the height so the gate reads as part of the run rather than an addition. Where the existing fence is weathered we will tell you honestly how close a new gate will get — new cedar next to eight-year-old cedar is never an exact match until it has aged a season or two.

On metal, matching is much easier: the same slat profile and the same powder-coat colour gets you an invisible join.

What a pedestrian gate costs

A walk gate is a small project with a lot of variables. What moves the number:

• Material and construction. Plain wood, wood on a steel frame, or all metal, in ascending order.
• Width and height. Anything wider than a standard walk opening needs a heavier frame and hinges.
• Infill. Solid panel uses far more material than open slat.
• The post. If the existing post is not up to the job it gets replaced, and that means concrete and cure time.
• Hardware. Basic latch, keyed lock, keypad or electric strike are very different lines.
• Ground. A sloping or uneven opening takes longer to get right.

Choosing a pedestrian gate contractor

Five questions that separate a gate built for the property from a gate built to a price:

• How deep is the hinge post going, and in how much concrete?
• What are the hinges rated for, and are they adjustable?
• On a wide or heavy leaf, is there a steel frame inside it?
• What fixings — stainless, hot-dipped galvanised, or electroplated?
• Is the gate being built to match the existing fence, and how close will it get?
