Repairing Vinyl Fence: What Can and Cannot Be Fixed

Vinyl is easier to repair than people assume, with one exception that cannot be fixed at all.

Panels come out

Vinyl panels slot into routed posts rather than being fixed to rails. A damaged panel can usually be lifted out and replaced without touching the rest of the run.

That is the material working exactly as intended and it is one of its genuine advantages.

Rails and posts too

Individual rails and posts can be replaced. A post generally means breaking out the footing, which is more work, but it is still a section repair rather than a rebuild.

A car reversing into one section of a Lakewood front fence is a straightforward job.

Bowed bottom rails

Long privacy spans need an aluminium or galvanised insert in the bottom rail. Without one they bow under their own weight within a couple of seasons.

Retrofitting inserts is possible and is usually worth doing on the affected spans while we are there.

Cracks and impact

Quality vinyl flexes and springs back. Cheap, under-modified vinyl cracks, and once it has cracked in the cold it will crack again.

Individual cracked panels swap out. If several are cracking, the material is the problem.

The one thing that cannot be fixed

Discolouration. Vinyl without a proper UV package chalks and goes yellow, and no cleaning or coating returns it.

At that point the only honest answer is replacement, and it is worth choosing better material the second time.
