Automatic Gate Repair: Common Problems & Solutions

Automatic gates are convenient right up until they are not. The faults we are called out for most, what causes them, and which ones you can rule out yourself in five minutes.

An automatic gate is two systems, not one

There is the gate — posts, frame, hinges or rollers — and there is the equipment that moves it. Diagnosing one while ignoring the other is why some gates get repaired twice.

The first thing we do on any automation callout is disengage the operator and move the gate by hand. If it is hard to move, the operator was never the problem. It has just been fighting a mechanical fault, and it will keep failing until that is fixed.

The five faults we see most

Nothing happens at all. Power first. Breaker, transformer, then the operator’s own fuse. Battery-backup systems can run for days and then quit long after the real power fault, which sends people looking in the wrong place.

Opens but will not close. Safety sensors. Photo eyes go out of alignment when something knocks the post, and they collect spider webs and dust. Clean them, check the indicator lights, and re-align before replacing anything.

Reverses partway. The operator has hit resistance and done its job. Something is binding — a roller, a track, or a gate that has dropped. Turning the force setting up to push through it is how operators and gates both get destroyed.

Remotes stop working. Batteries, then the receiver, then interference. New LED lighting and some solar inverters sit right on the same frequency and will cut a remote’s range to a few feet.

Runs but the gate does not stop where it should. Limit switches have drifted, usually after a mechanical repair. A ten-minute adjustment.

What to check before you call

Power on. Remote battery swapped. Photo eyes wiped clean and their lights checked. Gate moved by hand with the operator released. Those four take five minutes and rule out about a third of the callouts we get.

Safety is not optional

An automated gate is heavy machinery in a residential setting. Photo eyes, edge sensors and correctly set force limits are what stop it closing on a car, a pet or a child. If a previous repair left a sensor bypassed to “make it work”, that gate is not safe and we will tell you so.
