Gate Safety 101: Protecting Your Property & Loved Ones

A malfunctioning gate is more than an inconvenience. Photo eyes, edge sensors, force settings and the checks that keep an automated gate from becoming a hazard.

Gate Safety 101

What makes an automated gate safe

Three things working together: sensors that detect an obstruction, force settings low enough that the gate stops when it meets one, and a manual release that lets anyone open it in a power cut.

Remove any of the three and you have a heavy powered object with nothing to tell it something is in the way.

Photo eyes and edge sensors

Photo eyes throw a beam across the opening; breaking it stops or reverses the gate. Edge sensors run along the closing edge and react to contact. Photo eyes cover the gap, edges cover the gate itself. A well-set-up gate has both.

They need line of sight and they need cleaning. Most “the gate will not close” calls are a photo eye doing exactly its job.

Force settings

Every operator has an adjustable force limit. Set correctly, the gate stops when it meets resistance. The dangerous shortcut is turning force up so the gate pushes through a mechanical fault. If your gate needed more force to work than it used to, something is wrong with the gate.

The manual release

Know where it is and check it works. In a power cut, or if the operator fails with a vehicle inside, that release is the only way out. Some are keyed — keep the key somewhere you will find it in the dark.

Pool gates are a different standard

Gates forming part of a pool barrier have to be self-closing and self-latching, open away from the pool, and have the latch out of a child’s reach. That is code, not preference, and it is worth checking yours actually still does all three.

A yearly check is enough

Test the sensors by breaking the beam while it closes. Test the force by offering light resistance. Test the manual release. Look at the posts and hardware. Fifteen minutes, once a year, and you will know where you stand.
