Blocking Traffic Noise: Wall or Fence?

If the reason you are fencing is noise rather than privacy, the answer is different, and most fences will disappoint you.

Mass is what stops sound

Sound is blocked by weight, not by height. A solid timber fence takes the edge off traffic noise; it does not remove it, and no amount of extra height changes that much.

A masonry wall has the mass to make a real difference. That is the honest comparison.

What a fence will and will not do

A well-built solid fence with no gaps reduces perceived noise and, just as importantly, removes the sight of the traffic, which changes how much you notice it.

It will not make a busy road quiet. Anyone promising that is selling you something.

Where block wins

On a frontage facing a genuinely busy street, a block wall is the only fencing product that meaningfully reduces sound.

It costs several times what a fence costs and it is permanent, so it is worth being certain about the line before it goes up.

Gaps matter more than material

Sound leaks through gaps the way water does. A fence with spacing between boards, or a gap under the bottom rail, loses much of whatever benefit it had.

If noise is the objective, the build has to be tight at the bottom and at the joints.

The practical middle ground

Plenty of Los Angeles properties end up with a block wall on the street frontage and timber or vinyl down the sides where noise is not the issue.

It puts the money where it does something rather than spreading it evenly.
