Replacing Chain Link: What to Put Up Instead

Chain link does a job cheaply and looks like exactly what it cost. When it comes down, here is what people actually replace it with.

Be honest about what you need

Chain link gives you a boundary and containment with no privacy. If containment was all you needed, replacing like for like with a better-quality chain link is a legitimate answer.

Most people who call us want the privacy the old fence never gave them.

Wood, for warmth and budget

A cedar privacy fence is the most common replacement. It costs more than chain link and less than the alternatives, and it changes the character of a yard completely.

It needs staining every few years, which is the trade for the price and the look.

Vinyl, for walking away from it

Costs more up front, asks almost nothing afterwards. Worth it on a rental, on an awkward run, or for anyone who knows they will not maintain timber.

Get the panel spec in writing. Cheap vinyl and good vinyl look identical until the third summer.

Metal, where you want the view

Ornamental or slat metal keeps the security without closing the sight line. On a Long Beach front yard that is often the right answer where a solid fence would feel wrong.

What to do with the posts

Existing chain link posts are rarely suitable for a heavier fence. They are usually too light and set too shallow.

Anyone quoting to reuse them for a privacy fence is saving money in the one place you should not.
