Sloped Driveways: The Measurement Everyone Skips

It is the most expensive mistake in gate installation and it takes five minutes to avoid.

What goes wrong

A swing gate opening inward up a rising driveway travels through an arc. Partway through that arc the bottom of the leaf meets ground that is higher than where it started.

The gate stops. Not gradually, and not somewhere useful.

Why it gets missed

On a photograph or a flat plan the slope is invisible. Someone quoting from a phone conversation cannot know it exists.

On the hillside streets around La Canada Flintridge it exists more often than not.

The options once you know

Raise the bottom of the leaf, which leaves a gap. Swing outward, which is not always possible or safe onto a street. Or go to a slider or cantilever.

All three are workable. Discovering the problem after fabrication is what makes it expensive.

Stepped and raked gates

On a cross-slope, a gate can be built with its bottom edge following the ground rather than level. It looks deliberate rather than like a mistake.

It costs more to fabricate and it is the right answer on a lot of hillside entrances.

Measure the opening, check the fall across it, and swing a string line through the arc to see where the leaf would actually meet ground.

Five minutes at survey, and nobody discovers anything unfortunate on installation day.
