Why Cheap Horizontal Fences Start to Wave

Horizontal slat is the look everyone wants right now. It is also the style most often built badly, and the failure is always the same.

Horizontal Fence Why They Sag

The problem is span, not style

A horizontal board runs between posts with nothing supporting its middle. A vertical board is fixed to a rail every few feet. That is the entire difference, and it changes everything about how the fence has to be built.

Build a horizontal fence on standard vertical-fence post spacing and the boards start to bow within a season. That is the waviness you see on cheap installations around Studio City.

What it actually needs

Closer post spacing, straighter stock and more framing. Sometimes a mid-span support hidden behind the boards. All of that costs more in labour and material.

A quote for horizontal that matches a quote for vertical has skipped one of those things.

Timber selection matters more

A bowed board in a vertical fence is barely noticeable. In a horizontal run every board is a long straight line at eye level and any deviation shows.

That means paying for better grade stock and rejecting more of it on site.

Metal as an alternative

Aluminium or steel slat gives you the same contemporary look without the movement, and the spans it can handle are longer.

It costs more up front and it will not have the warmth of timber, but on a long exposed run it is worth pricing.

What to ask before you sign

What post spacing, what board thickness, and is there support at mid-span. Three questions that separate a fence that looks right in year five from one that does not.

If the answers are vague, the fence will be too.
