Rust on a Metal Fence: What Is Cosmetic and What Is Not

Near the coast this is the question we get asked most. The answer depends entirely on where the rust is.

Surface rust is cosmetic

Orange staining on the face of a picket or rail, where a chip has let moisture reach the steel, is a finish problem rather than a structural one.

Wire it back to bare metal, prime and recoat. Caught early it never becomes anything more.

Rust at the base is structural

Where a post meets the ground it stays damp longest and rust works from the inside of the section outward. By the time it shows, the wall may be substantially gone.

Push the post. If there is give, or if the metal sounds thin when tapped, that post has reached the end.

Welds go first

Welding burns off the protective coating, and if the joint was not re-primed after fabrication that is exactly where corrosion starts.

Why aluminium is worth pricing here

It does not rust at all. Within reach of the marine layer that removes the whole problem, and the premium over steel is often less than the cost of refinishing steel twice.

It dents more easily, which for a residential boundary is rarely the deciding factor.

When to recoat the whole run

If rust is appearing in multiple places at once, spot repairs are chasing the problem. Media blasting and recoating a full run is a real cost and it resets the clock.
