Pool Fencing: The Rules That Actually Matter

Pool barriers are the one area of fencing where the specification is not a preference. Here is what a compliant barrier has to do.

It is a barrier, not a fence

A pool barrier has a job: to stop a small child reaching the water unaccompanied. Every requirement follows from that, and it is worth understanding why rather than just meeting a number.

Height, gap sizes, gate direction and latch position all exist for the same reason.

The gate is the weak point

It has to be self-closing and self-latching from any open position, and it has to swing away from the pool so a child pushing on it closes it rather than opening it.

The latch sits high, out of reach. A latch a child can reach is a barrier that does not work.

Gaps and climbability

Vertical gaps are limited so a child cannot squeeze through, and the space beneath the barrier is limited so they cannot get under.

Horizontal rails at climbing height on the pool side defeat the whole thing. This is why metal barriers usually run vertical.

The part people forget

Self-closing hinges weaken. A barrier that complied when it was installed may not close reliably three years later, and nobody notices until it matters.

Test it: open the gate to any position and let go. If it does not close and latch on its own every time, it needs attention.
